This fabulous French restaurant is the best in the area, and according to American Express, the best in western New South Wales. The pretty National Trust house dates from 1880 and is decorated in a contemporary style with exceptional art. The house is surrounded by lovely gardens where lunch is served in summer. Right on gorgeous Balmoral Beach, Bathers has one of the most beautiful locations anywhere. The restaurant was recently renovated and now it's as striking inside as out. Lunch here on a pretty day can be a religious experience. New chef Serge Dansereau offers a modern Australian menu with a few surprises. If the restaurant's too pricey, the adjoining cafe -- where you can enjoy a wood-fired pizza -- is more affordable. But the fixed price lunch menu is a good deal.

It just doesn't seem fair that one small beach should have two wonderful restaurants within spitting distance of each other. Watermark -- Balmoral's other choice (the first being Bather's Pavilion) is almost as good. Great views, good service, a wonderful wine list. No wonder it's an American Express Hall of Fame winner.
