Afloat in Amsterdam.

What is it about being on the water?  Watching the world go by from the bow of a boat just never seems to get old.  And even things that are irritating on land – traffic jams, neighbors – are pleasant distractions when you’re afloat.

There are several cities where you can stay on a houseboat or barge instead of at a hotel.  And there are real advantages.  Most floating accommodations offer a lot more living space than a conventional hotel room.  And usually, you’re just steps away from the city’s main attractions.

On the down side, a deposit is usually required, there may be a surcharge to use a credit card, and the head (bathroom) will undoubtedly be temperamental.

If you can get past that, you’ll enjoy the incomparable pleasure of having a private deck right smack dab in the heart of things.  After a long day of sightseeing, there’s no nicer place for a glass of wine with your traveling companion.

With dozens of lovely canals and a wide variety of stay-aboard options to choose from, Amsterdam is a great place to get your sea legs.   From a beautifully refurbished turn-of-the-century barge to a modern houseboat with a charming garden, there’s something for every taste – and budget.

Rates start as low as EU125 a night, and many come with bikes, which are a convenient way to get around.  http://www.houseboathotel.nl has a great selection.
