San Carlos de Bariloche and Argentina's Patagonia.

If you haven't been to Argentina yet, chances are it's on your short list. The charms of Buenos Aires are one of travel's worst-kept secrets.

But Argentina is one of the most beautiful countries in the world. So even those who are just planning to pop down for a city visit should add Patagonia and the Lakes district to their itinerary.Llao Llao Argentina

San Carlos de Bariloche, a two-hour flight from Buenos Aires, makes an easy gateway. The town, which looks like a Swiss village, is underwhelming - you'll see all there is to see in a couple of hours. But the location on Lake Nahuel Huapi is beautiful.

Rent a car, and drive about 20 miles north to Llao Llao, one of the most spectacular resorts in South America. On the way, take the cable car to the top of Cerro Campanario for 360-degree views of the Nahuel Huapi National park.

A member of the Leading Hotels of the World group, Llao Llao was built in the 1930s and modeled after the grand lodges of the Canadian Rockies. It puts the mountains, lakes, and forests of Patagonia right at your doorstep.

Spend the day hiking, fishing, mountain biking, or boating, then come back and relax in the lap of luxury. The view of glacier-capped Mt. Mount Tronodor ArgentinaTronodor from the infinity pool is not to be missed. Learn more about the resort at www.llaollao.com.

If you have a little more time, drive about 90 minutes north to Villa La Angostura, a charming village not far from the Chilean border. Known for its rustic architecture and Patagonian cuisine - trout, deer, wild boar, and local lamb - Villa La Angostura is simultaneously laid back and luxurious. This is where Argentina's rich and famous come to unwind.

There are several great places to stay here. Las Balsas, a member of the Relais & Chateaux group, has just 15 rooms, a small spa, and a world-class restaurant. Make reservations at http://www.lasbalsas.com.ar.

A less expensive option is Correntoso Lake and River Hotel, which has a fantastic lake-front location, and a sophisticated lodge ambience. You can book through Small Luxury Hotels, or at their website, http://www.correntoso.com.
