Transatlantic cruises in high demand after volcanic interruption.
The New York Times reported this morning that as far as the disruption caused by the Eyjafjallajokull volcano was concerned, the airlines’ loss was the cruise lines’ gain. Well, one ship in particular – the Queen Mary 2, which is the only cruise ship that still makes regular transatlantic crossings.
There were more than 1,000 passengers on the waiting list for today’s crossing.
Transatlantic cruises aren’t for everyone. As a rule, they take a week, and there are no ports between Southampton and New York – just lots of time at sea. But most passengers who were stuck at Heathrow would probably have thought that relaxing in a deck chair on the way back home would have been a dream come true.
Operated by Cunard, Queen Mary 2 crosses the Atlantic from now until November. Some voyages are deeply discounted and selling for about $1,000 per person.
If you have the time, a voyage on the Queen Mary 2 is a relaxing way to travel to or from Europe in comfort and luxury.
