    Day 1 - 3, Amsterdam
You can add Amsterdam to the beginning or end of any of our other recommended trips to Europe. Or combine it with other cities for a grand tour.

If you have never been to Amsterdam before, we recommend that you spend at least three nights. If you?ve been before, two nights may be sufficient, depending on your interests.

For a list of our recommended accommodations in Amsterdam, click here.

If you are flying into Amsterdam, there is rail service between Schiphol Airport and the Central Rail station. Trains leave about every 15 minutes and the trip takes around 20 minutes. The one-way fare is 3EUR. The train is quicker and less expensive than bus or taxi.

Although Amsterdam is easy to explore on foot, public transportation is also quite good. If you don?t want to walk everywhere, there are several kinds of transportation passes available. For specific information, use the search engine with the parameters "Amsterdam" and "Local Transportation", or click here for Amsterdam local transportation.

If you plan to visit more than a few museums, a museum pass is another good investment. There are two available -- one for Amsterdam only and purchased for 1, 2, or 3 days, starting from 31EUR. And one that is good throughout Holland for 29.95EUR. They are available at VVV Tourist Information Offices.

You?ll need a passport and an extra passport photo to purchase the country-wide pass, so take extra photos along.

Our Amsterdam database contains information about scores of attractions. For specific information including admission fees, hours, address, and phone numbers use our search engine or the links to the right.

A few of the web sites we link to are in Dutch. We?ve tried to provide you with all the necessary information in English, and have provided the links in case you need additional information. You can translate text from Dutch into English by visiting the UNC library at www.ibiblio.org/dbarberi/dict.
