With its gorgeous fireplace and beautiful furnishings, our "luxury double" here was one of the nicest rooms we've ever stayed in -- anywhere. The bathroom was unsurpassed in its luxury and comfort. There's a terrific restaurant on the property, which is about a 15-minute walk to town. There are only ten rooms at this former girls' school, so book well in advance.

Now that the Mount Cook Travelodge is the Glencoe Wing of the Hermitage, all decent accommodations in the area are under the same umbrella. The Hermitage is the star, and a $15 million NZD renovation has recaptured a little of the luster this once great property had lost. The views are as spectacular as ever, particularly from the bench of your balcony. Not all rooms have views, so confirm at booking. Rooms 601 to 613, 701 to 713, and 830 to 839 are good. Book as far in advance as you can - space is at a premium, particularly in summer.

Spectacularly located overlooking the Shotover River, this is a quiet bed and breakfast five minutes from town. There are three rooms in the main house, two with balconies.
